The Church of Our Saviour on the Spilled Blood was built 1883 – 1907 as a memorial church on the spot where on March 1,1881 the member of the “Narod and Volia” organisation I. I. Grinevitsky mortally wounded emperor Alexander II. The building is built in Russian style of 16-17th centuries using the forms and compositional elements of Moscow Intercession Cathedral on the moat (St. Basil’s Cathedral). The Church of Our Saviour on the Spilled Blood is distinguished by its picturesque silhouette, rich colourful decoration. The facades are lined with ceramic tiles, and colored glazed bricks, in the interior decoration the Italian marbles and different sorts of semi precious Russian stones were used. The largest ensemble of mosaics on the facades and in the interiors of the church was made according to the designs of the artists M. V. Vasnetsov, M. V, Nesterov, M. A. Vrubel, A. P. Riabushinsky and others in the workshops of A. A. and V. A. Frolov since 1895.
